WHITE LION

Hi, I came across an interesting episode of White Lions in animal planet. I have heard of white tigers, but this was even more amazing. So i wanted to add them up to my world.

Here are a few facts about these wonderful creatures.....
For centuries rumors of mysterious white lions (Panthera leo krugeri) had been circulating in South Africa. Legend said the white pelage represented the good to be found in all creatures.

White lions first came to public attention in the 1970s in Chris McBride's book The White Lions of Timbavati. According to Linda Tucker, in "Mystery of the White Lions - Children of the Sun God" they are bred in camps in South Africa as trophies for canned hunts. White lions were first recorded in 1928 and in the early 1940s. Sanbona Wildlife Reserve in the Western Cape of South Africa introduced a white lion couple, Queen and Jabulani, to the vast reserve in 2003 with the vision of letting them roam free and wild.

In May 2007 four white lion cubs were born at Jurques Zoo in France. Confirmation of the existence of white lions only came in the late twentieth century. Sightings were first reported in the early 1900s, and continued although not frequently.
White lions were first seen in the United States in 1993.Luckily there is more then one genetic strain of white lion to pool from, unlike that of the white tiger.

Today only around 300 white lions survive worldwide. The bloodlines are represented worldwide in zoos from Africa, Japan, Germany, USA and Canada.
